However, inspired by someone who told her “you are a reflection of the five people closest to you” she begins a journey of self discovery. Thank you to HarperCollins UK and NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Aurora is a very dedicated traffic warden and goes the extra mile to make sure that anyone parked illegally is given a parking ticket.

Like stars in the dark skies above the tiny island where she grew up, freckles scatter Allegra Bird’s arms, a link to her beloved father. After an orthodox childhood being raised by Pops on Valentia Island, Allegra, AKA Freckles, is somewhat of an unconventional protagonist. In the case of Freckles, her character gradually built, layer upon layer, while in the case of the seemingly perfect people around her, their layers got peeled away one by one, exposing the emptiness and rotteness at their core. I’ve already decided I’m not going to answer that question, because I don’t even know who the five people are and I don’t even want to think about it .Her debut novel, PS I Love You was published in January 2004, and was followed by Where Rainbows End (aka Love, Rosie) in November 2004. In her current life as a parking warden, she has left her eccentric father and unconventional childhood behind for a bold new life in the city.

We’re reminded that our impressions of people may not always be correct, that people’s personalities come in shades of grey and they can often surprise us. She is a parking warden and after a particularly difficult confrontation, she is told you are the average of the 5 people that you spend most of your time with.So when a stranger tells her she’s the sum of five people – the five people she spends the most time with – she’s suddenly no longer seeking one person. Told in Allegra’s vivid, original voice, moving from Dublin to the fierce Atlantic coast, this is an unforgettable story of human connection, of friendship, and growing into your own skin. I hate to say it because I know so many families have gone through so much and I want to acknowledge that. When one day on her beat she meets Rooster a famous youtuber who drives a bright yellow Ferrari, one that she has ticketed every day for the last two weeks, with his temper rising he insults Allegra by saying that she is made up of the 5 people she has around her. The book was adapted as a motion picture directed by Richard LaGravenese and starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler.

She is a great character and you enjoy spending time with her as she goes on this journey, which involves laughter, embarrassment, tears and a discovery about who she is and what she wants out of life.I ready this book quickly as I found myself wanting to see what happened to her and the other characters. She is used to people shouting at her and being angry but Tristans words stay with her- you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, This sends Allegra into a spin, who are her five people? The main tenet of the book about the five people who shape you was one which really resonated with me and was thought provoking. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review. She won the 2005 Irish Post Award for Literature and a 2005 Corine Literature Prize for her second book Where Rainbows End, (Für immer vielleicht) which was voted for by German readers.

Unfortunately I didn’t have a cute smattering across my nose, rather they were clumped together in splotches. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. But through this, and a side story of looking for her mother, Allegra develops and comes to realise that sometimes what you were looking for is what you have all along.
