There’s a great moment where she remembers getting second place to Henry in a contest and cried, coz she’d worked really hard to win the RMB500 prize while Henry just entered the contest last-minute on a whim. i went into this with super high expectations - everyone was rating it five stars and i was 100% convinced it was going to be my new favorite book.

The plot was so easy to get caught up in but also focused heavily on these little moments between the two main characters, who I ended up really liking. The concept of this book was so fun and entertaining but considered some really heavy topics as well, especially as money was such a huge part of the story.

this book has been on my tbr and one of my most anticipated reads for months and i just want to say that ann liang’s books will never disappoint! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. i might have stayed up all night at a decently good time just thinking about them instead of while studying for my finals. I loved their banter and their scenes together, especially as Alice gradually realizes that Henry isn’t a bad person.between a girl who suddenly can become invisible, the shenanigans she gets up to, as well as the looming crush on her academic rival, this has a great set-up for an entertaining time. let me just take a moment to acknowledge that he's not only a fan of taylor swift but also incredibly kind to every single person he encounters. she got me rooting for her even through the kidnapping and the blackmails and every questionable decision that she's made. I liked both of the main characters, and their relationship between us which had an academic enemies to lovers trope.

The author did a good job of showing the escalation of the tasks students hired Alice to do, from rather sordid but standard spy jobs that gradually intensify towards outright criminal acts. I sympathize with her desperation to earn enough money to stay in school, and I agree that any penalties should be meted out fairly.i really love how caring he is especially towards alice and is always, and i mean always, there for her. However, her time there will come to an end soon as her parents inform her that they can no longer afford the part of the school fees that her scholarship does not cover. The chemistry between these two is absolutely unmatched and the banter (mostly one-sided on Alice’s end) was so fun to read about! I like how Henry always viewed their rivalry as friendly while Alice saw it as much more serious, because she had so much more at stake with winning. Born in Beijing, she grew up travelling back and forth between China and Australia, but somehow ended up with an American accent.

The way he was literally blushing whenever Alice looked at him and how he always wanted her attention was to die for! i absolutely loved him even more than i loved alice, admiring how he consistently supported and stood by her.this really isn’t that deep but i would like to point out that there are in fact schools with ib in america! the way he’s always trying to get on alice’s nerves was so adorable ahh the fact they were academic rivals but he has a photo of him and alice on his desk? As much as I want to gatekeep Henry🥹🥹, READ THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE THAT CUTE, LIGHTHEARTED HIGH SCHOOL MAGIC.
