Description

I Love You, Mum - I Promise I Won't Die , was originally commissioned by the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation , the drug education charity. Most telling of all Amy Zoldan as Alice wrestles with her conscience as the person who everyone blames for Dan’s death. An important and often overlooked route into the industry, especially for many non-performing roles.

Elliot Montgomery’s production for Octopus Dream Theatre is powerful, poignant and intensely moving, from the boisterous roistering of the early stages to a quiet stillness that overwhelms the audience. The verbatim nature of the whole show gives a naturally convincing edge to all the narration and Wheeller balances the different voices perfectly.

When Dan, a sixteen year old boy loses his life under sad circumstances it is nothing short of a tragedy. With three separate Lucian Freud exhibitions currently on, Graham Hooper took time to visit and here is his review of these contrasting shows. The solution was a hoodie – both a symbolic prop and item of costume – which enabled different members of the ensemble to take on the role of Dan. The Dan his parents knew was the real Dan, but not the complete Dan, and a wretched mistake ended his life.

This book offers a unique and fulsome guide for teaching/studying this play and includes a detailed scheme of work for teachers using the play as a set text in the GCSE Drama examination. Friends talk about Dan, telling us what he was like when they first met him and later when they knew him for a while. There’s also links to the foundation set up in Daniel’s memory, ran by Fiona (his Mum) please take a look and see the work they are doing. Schools where students are studying or performing the play are able to book a conversation online with Fiona, and prepare questions to help them understand the story, the people, and the process behind the making of the play. Mark worked on the very first production with his talented youth theatre company in Southampton, Oasis Youth Theatre, and the play had its first public performances in March 2016, with previews in Southampton and its premiere at the BRIT school, just a mile from Dan’s home in Croydon, South London. We really hope this will mean families will come together and have conversations at home that help other teenagers keep themselves safe – but it’s also a beautiful play and a fantastic production, creating an opportunity for anyone who loves great theatre to experience it, and to get to know our Dan. David Chafer (Mark) is perfectly hesitant as he explores Dan’s life from Year 7 onwards with his friends.
