Description

With his gangly frame and contortionist abilities, Cleese brilliantly punctuates Basil's outrageous faux pas with absurd gymnastics and turns Three Stooges-style pokes and kicks into a slapstick ballet. Finally, in 'The Wedding Party', Basil gets the wrong impression when some old friends of Polly (Booth)'s arrive at the hotel. The show is not noticeably serialized, so Basil never learns anything from the various catastrophes he gets himself into.

full frame presentations aren't overwhelmingly better than my memory of what the last DVD set of "Fawlty Towers" looked like.

The Builders' sees Basil in hot water with Sybil when he employs the unreliable Irish labourer Mr O'Reilly (David Kelly) to do some work in the hotel lobby. THE KIPPER AND THE CORPSE includes 'The Kipper and the Corpse', 'Gourmet Night', and 'Waldorf Salad'.

The Out Takes are a bit disappointing, in my opinion; there are only eight or so, none of which are as good as you might hope. I understand that their bickering is part of the joke, but it's distracting that their entire marriage consists of the characters' hatred for one another. If you are in Australia or New Zealand (DVD Region 4), note that almost all DVDs distributed in the UK by the BBC and 2entertain are encoded for both Region 2 and Region 4.The Kipper and the Corpse' finds Basil and Manuel trying to dispose of a dead body without any of the guests noticing.

I feel this booklet could have been much better, it's a bit short but I suppose the extras on the third disc make up for it a bit. Finally, "Basil the Rat" introduces an entirely unpredictable animal element in addition to an imposing, short-tempered health inspector. Together they run their hotel, Fawlty Towers, with a little help from the unflappable Polly, and Manuel, the trainee waiter from Barcelona with marginally more intelligence than a monkey.Fawlty Towers" is far from my favorite sitcom (or even my favorite British sitcom), but it still has plenty of top-notch writing, sharp dialogue and brilliant physical comedy packed into its short run.
