While the ET-8500 excels when printing on glossy and luster papers, my results with matte or fine art papers were quite good as well. The Canon also has faster printing speeds and a much larger 600-sheet input tray for big print jobs. It sounds simple, but the first time I tried to set up the straight path, I couldn’t tell at all what I was supposed to do. Print speed is far down my list of reasons for choosing one photo printer over another, but in the interest of completeness, I’ll note that the ET-8500 is quite speedy, both when printing photos and documents.

To my eye, there wasn’t a lot of difference between Fine and Best Quality, especially with regard to black-and-white documents—Best Quality often took four times longer than Fine to print. The Epson EcoTank ET-8550 supports media sizes up to and incuding A3+, which is slightly larger than standard A3. In addition to the standard process colors of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK), the ET-8550 has two additional inks, Photo Black and Gray. However, the Epson is more versatile because it has a scanner, and its ink tank yields more prints, resulting in a significantly lower cost per print. This printer has six tanks for cyan, magenta, yellow, gray, black (pigment), and photo black (dye) ink.thick card via the rear tray, which has a fairly flat paper path, though when we tried some, it got stuck. There’s no Bluetooth or NFC, but there is an SD Card slot alongside a front USB Host port behind that front flap. It prints high-quality black-and-white documents at a decent speed, and its ink tank yields thousands of pages, meaning it requires very little maintenance.

For Ultra Premium Glossy, there is an even higher "Best" aka "Max" setting which has slightly better detail (5760x1440 dpi) but no better saturation or contrast and is very slow. It's twice as fast as its predecessor, 2017’s Expression Premium ET-7750, and it adds a sixth ink color, which improves its overall color accuracy and detail. When printing multiple copies of the same letter, using only black ink, the ET-8550 averages 15ppm (pages per minute), with the first sheet landing on the out tray in 13 seconds.

I did profile their Exhibition Fiber paper, a soft gloss fiber-based paper that I use quite frequently, as well as their Legacy Fibre, an ultra-high-end cotton fiber paper with a matte finish.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. But, and the size of the "but" here depends upon how tightly-fitted your own perfectionist cap is, the colors aren't strictly accurate. That’s still not bad, however, and significantly it’s hugely cheaper than the A3-capable Canon Pixma PRO-200, which has per-page costs of around 13p for mono and 13.For plain paper printing, the ET-8500 has four printing modes, Economy, Normal, Fine, and Best Quality, which essentially moves from super fast to super slow as the quality increases. The 3-in-1 printer is also quick to set-up and use; fill up with the ink (supplied), turn the printer on and prime the ink system. Pigment printers do have a slight advantage with fine art and matte media types, and viewers were a bit more discerning, picking the pigment printers as generally better than those on the ET-8500. It prints high-quality black and color documents at a decent pace and supports automatic double-sided printing. While they’re not designed to be fine-art printers, they will be darn close for most casual and serious amateur photographers who want to get into printing.
