It was a good thing when Crecy released this complete edition - as originally published censors cut out material that was still thought militarily sensitive and some of Gibson's opinions. It shows how the rules of engagement developed from trying to avoid harming civilians in Kiel (even at the expense of missing military targets) to both sides actively targeting civilians in heavy industry or civilians more generally. Reading it closely, I was startled by the juxtaposition of bits that are obviously true and well-described, immediately followed by paragraphs of total bushwah. I have read several accounts of the air war over Europe, both from the perspective of the Royal Air Force and the U. The events described therein are testament to the abilities and courage of someone quite rightly held up as one of the finest leader of men in wartime.

While not 100% accurate in describing the "Dambusters" mission this first person narrative is outstanding. At first rejected when he failed the Medical Board, his later application was nevertheless successful. Coningsby ( Lincolnshire, April 13th, 1942 ) to fly bomber operations again in Avro Manchesters and Lancasters. Particularly entertaining is his recounting of multiple pilots (both British and German) mistaking Britain for France (or vice versa) and landing (or bombing! All this planning and preparation ends when the player decides his squadron is ready and he launches the raid.

He also clearly recounts the issues facing the early pilots taking the war to Germany from within what seemed an almost amateurish Bomber Command. Some of the technical details of the Dams raid were omitted for obvious reasons (and were still not known when the famous film was made in 1955) but the book is fascinating none the less.During an attack you will strive for the perfect angle, the ideal speed and altitude, adjusting one or more of these before releasing Upkeep at just the right distance from the dam (“Upkeep” was the codename for the bouncing bomb).
