Godliness and sensuality are mutually exclusive, and those in the grasp of sensuality can never rise to godliness while in its [sic] grip. It is a well thought out comprehensive compilation of encouragements and challenges to help us grow in godliness and well worth having a copy to hand.

As Kent Hughes explains in the beginning of his book, Disciplines of a Godly Man, in today's culture there is an alarming lack of spiritual leadership in today's evangelical churches. Be involved, be willing to be uncomfortable, to be challenged, and to fail, if all for the glory of Christ. And his suffering was not only the cross, but it was and is suffering that comes from identification with his bride, the church. Finally, there is a short epilogue with a concluding argument for the importance of Godly discipline and the correct response to grace God has given us.

As the title implies, this is a book about disciplines for men who are trying to live a 'Godly' life.

I felt the author’s most passionate chapter was the chapter on witnessing and I was quite encouraged by the author’s own example of making the most out of evangelistic opportunities. At the end of each chapter are helpful applications to the topic being studied and useful additional resources for further reading. After the introduction the book that talks about the importance of discipline of godliness author R.

Hughes definitely has an expansive heart for men in the American church and rightly assesses that the disciplines are some of the primary means by which men can actually start to develop a real spiritual fervor in their lives. I think this is a serviceable introduction to the disciplines but readers should approach it with the Gospel firmly in their heart and mind. For instance there’s various Bible reading plans presented to the readers, a personal reading survey in which Kent Hughes asks various Christian leaders what are their five favorite books (secular or sacred) and what’s their spiritual ones that’s their favorite, etc. My main problem with the book was that some of the passages did get a little repetitive but that’s okay because it showed how the disciplines feed into one another. Disciplines is a subject about which the Scriptures say much - but contemporary authors have been peculiarly silent.

There are some books, though very few, that remain ‘evergreen’―that through the years remain as useful and challenging as the day they were written. But through a vast majority of the writing it comes across as though he is making a long spiritual to-do list that causes more burden than freedom, which is what the disciplines are really for. Through a series of short, yet accurate chapters on a variety of areas that pertain to Christian men, Hughes drives home the point that spiritual discipline is a necessary part of the believer's life. Kent Hughes was in pastoral ministry for 41 years, the last 27 as senior pastor of College Church in Wheaton.

Kent Hughes’s inspiring and bestselling book Disciplines of a Godly Man ―now updated with fresh references and suggested resources―is filled with godly advice aimed at helping men grow in the disciplines of prayer, integrity, marriage, leadership, worship, purity, and more. Kent Hughes skillfully weaves together the teachings of Scripture with real-life examples as he powerfully teaches us what true Christian manhood looks like in the ordinary details of our lives.I also appreciate the book recommendations near the end of each chapter and Those given by many of the pillars of our faith near the end of the book. Some of the disciplines include purity, marriage, and the discipline of the mind, discipline of devotion, integrity, work and discipline of giving and discipline of ministry. A helpful challenge for me to live up the biblical commands for Christian men across the whole of life. If so this book is one you should consider picking up and reading; or purchasing for someone as a gift. To be fair, he spends the last 6 pages or so speaking on the disciplines in the context of grace and warning against legalism.
