Description

You can choose from ten different scratch patterns by moving the play head position shown on the on-jog display. As for the professional market, I believe a Mk2 version is needed with balanced outputs before the FLX can be viable for them. Please note that the verification process may mean we have to send the item back to the manufacturer.

The jog cutter allows you to move the jog wheel back and forth between 6 defined sections, and “a professional scratch effect will be applied to the last Hot Cue or playback position you used on that deck”. Then, when you take your hand off the Hot Cue position, the track will keep playing from where it was before. Adding flare to sets and mixing between genres, no matter what the key or BPM of the next track is, can be flawless thanks to the new Merge FX feature. The mic input does not have soundcard connectivity, thus it does not output sound to software recording or streaming programs directly. The wheels are impressively sized: they are the same size as the ones you’d find on a CDJ-3000 or Pioneer DDJ-1000. Sample Scratch relies on Rekordbox’s usual sample bank and sadly offers less options than Serato’s Scratch bank. The presets are based around “risers” and “drops” (risers use a build sample, drops use a drop sample).

Despite being capacitive, they act very similar to Pioneer DJ’s infamous CDJ jogs: weighted, noisy, and tactile. Pioneer DJ aren’t re-inventing the wheel here, as such you will find on this unit the same Jogwheel size that is on their flagship CDJ-3000 series players with on-display functionality that allows you to truly feel immersed in your mixes. Crafted from 9 mm vinyl laminated plywood, sturdy aluminum profiles and heavy duty butterfly latches, it provides you with secure transport and workstation in one. This feature is much easier to demonstrate than to explain, so check the video above for several examples of Merge FX in action.

The beauty is that it can be done at any point throughout any track and then play can be selected on the other deck to introduce the next track (from any genre with a different BPM) flawlessly. The controller allows the DJ creative freedom when selecting and mixing tracks, and takes away the worry of trying to merge two tracks from different backgrounds together seamlessly. The four-channel mixer section of the FLX-6 allows for easy four-deck DJing, which opens up many possibilities that other competing midrange devices don’t have. However, they also act as a great tool for getting from one place to another in your set via drop mixing (rather than beatmatching).

Beginner DJ’s wanting to start on Rekordbox DJ, this controller serves those with larger budgets well. Although, just as with the Pad Scratch mode, using the effect in performance is challenging and often doesn’t sound great. Instead of a standalone mixer section and a metal-reinforced body (like the SR2), the FLX6 sports four channels and full-sized jog wheels – two very enticing features that are generally only found on higher-end Pioneer DJ gear. The effect will either create a build-up or break down depending on the direction the DJ turns the dial.

Each of these groups has 41 different effects that can be combined to make more than 9,000 different patterns.
