Description

All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren is a political novel that delves into the story of Willie Stark, a charismatic politician who rises to power in the face of corruption and moral dilemmas. It doesn’t work and Stark missions Jack to investigate the judge’s past and unearth some dirt for Stark to gain leverage.

And we come to see that Stark’s high-toned political opponents are more corrupt — at least more financially corrupt — than he. One of the characters in Proud Flesh was named Willie Talos, in reference to the brutal character Talus in Edmund Spenser's late 16th-century epic poem The Faerie Queene. I have read a good chunk of Warren’s poetry – he is one of our greats, although not famous like Robert Frost – and am now wondering which of his novels I should read next. After triggering his father’s death under circumstances that make the story of Oedipus look like an unfortunate happenstance, Burden accepts the inheritance of the man’s house and money without qualm or question. Even the book’s title All the King’s Men, while a direct quote from the Humpty Dumpty fable, also acts as a reference to Long’s campaign song ‘ Every Man a King’. Meanwhile, he also finds out about Anne and Jack's past relationship and Anne's continued love for Jack, leading to a fallout between him and Anne. Perhaps he’s motivated by the narcissistic desire to be the great working-class hero, adored and revered, but at least he started out meaning to do good.

As you say, they are not specific for politicians, you see the same in all spheres of life, where some sort of power / money can be achieved.Had Warren ever questioned this primitive political scheme, he might have confronted Burden with a less melodramatic moral dilemma. The "Great Twitch" is a particular brand of nihilism that Jack embraces during his journey westward: "all the words we speak meant nothing and there was only the pulse in the blood and the twitch of the nerve, like a dead frog's leg in the experiment when the electric current goes through. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant", and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. That is Robert Penn Warren's lush "All the King's Men,""--"Los Angeles Times Book Review" "It's a measure of the enduring worth of "All the King's Men" that Willie Stark has entered our collective literary consciousness, in the company of Captain Ahab, Huck Finn, Jay Gatsby, Holden Caulfield, Rabbit Angstrom, and very few others.
