He’s shown himself to be trustworthy and yet, at the first challenge, the heroine throws him under the bus and leaves. A rollicking romantic comedy featuring a witch who'd rather be baking than casting spells and the sexy demon she summons by mistake, Hawley's page-turning treat takes the fake dating trope to a whole new level.

She accidentally summoned the most vicious demon to her kitchen and she cannot send him till she accepts to give him her soul in exchange a favor! I don't want this to come off as prudish and I don't want to spoil anything, but there were elements of this book that made it seem like self-insert fan fiction, or maybe a Wattpad serial. Don’t get fooled with his nickname Ozorth the ruthless: nothing is merciless about that charming evil!Honestly though, her being this bad at magic just pissed me off because at 70% of the book HOW are you still incompetent? The book starts with Ozroth the Ruthless having recently acquired one (1) human soul which is a pretty bad deal for any self-respecting demon. I also wish Mariel would’ve refrained from telling her friends that she was fake dating Oz because it kinda dampened the effect. They keep Ozorth’s identity as secret because Mariel has no intention to declare her incompetence to her mother! I loved the awkwardness of the relationship – what exactly does a witch do with a sexy demon that she’s summoned?

As for Ozorth, this powerful witch is sweetest, smartest and quirkiest enigma he finds himself fall for! I must admit, Mariel is so much stronger than I am because this book was way more slow burn than I would’ve been able to manage. She was a winner of RevPit 2018, and her short stories and satirical articles have been published by Hooked, Slackjaw, The Belladonna Comedy, and Points in Case. There was also a lot of growth from our FMC, which I was so happy to see, as well as some very positive messaging, especially near the end. But Ozroth has a limited amount of time to strike the deal, and if Mariel gives up her soul, she’ll lose all her emotions—including love—which will only spell disaster for them both. Too insta love, too convoluted for no reason, too YA (He's 200, she's 28), too predictable without the benefit of a fun journey to get there. Mariel then ups the magical mishaps when she tries to use magic to summon an ingredient for cooking and accidentally summons a demon, Ozroth (H).
