I am too young to remember it very well when it was televised, my mom used to put it on every week and was spellbound. This praised the authenticity of the setting and costumes, as at that point directors, designers and the senior members of the cast still remembered the war.

In February 2018, Talking Pictures TV, who have been showing the series were reprimanded by OfCom for failing to censure a 1942 episode Hazard (Episode 24), (link to afamilyatwar. Edwin was the poorly-paid assistant manager of a small printing works owned by his wife’s family, beholden at work to his pompous widowed brother-in-law, Sefton Briggs (John McKelvey) who inherited the business with his sister, Edwin’s wife Jean (Shelagh Fraser). The real surprise, though, is seeing a young David Bradley as 'Colin' (stuck in a reserved occupation in Preston), many years before his star turn as 'Eddie Wells' in 'Our Friends In The North' and Richard Beckinsale in a blink-and-you'll miss him role as a young soldier eating egg and chips in 1940 Belgium.

That’s a tribute to the actress, but we realized that her character was carrying over for us from the (later) brilliant series written by Andrew Davies, A Very Peculiar Practice, in which she plays the right-on feminist Dr Magda, who sees everything in a sexual light! The best and most revealing comment about the budget of Family was Denis Forman’s, “It was the most cost effective television series ever made.According to one contemporaneous report, the programme’s ‘opening episode was seen in 6,850,000 homes, probably representing some 20 million viewers’, taking it ‘straight into the top ten with its first programme’, only just below the well-established Coronation Street in the ratings ( Sun, 28 April 1970). So much of the literature of Shetland focuses on crofting communities and the traditional way of life of rural communities. However, among the impressive line-up of prestige drama production that was cited in the programme, including Brideshead Revisited, The Jewel in the Crown and Prime Suspect, no mention at all was made of one of Granada’s biggest hits of its formative years: the epic series A Family at War (1970 to 1972).

They get through D-Day preparations, D-Day, the whole 1944-45 campaign and VE day with only David’s career in the RAF providing a link to the war. My husband and I were stationed at Lakenheath when this series premiered and I scheduled my viewing time accordingly. The Ashton family struggles to deal with the harsh realities of the Second World War as their sons are sent away to fight.

Sefton turns up for a surprise visit and is shocked to find they’re off for an unmarried weekend away.
